In
the area Kanoneiland lies the Rekopane Estates, where
they grow superb table grapes that are exported all over
the world. Here, too, you will find glorious roses which
are cultivated in a controlled environment. Their country
cousins, which grow in the open, are to be seen everywhere,
but those at Rekopane are hand-reared aristocrats, blazing
gorgeous. There’s also a magnificent herb garden, the
produce of which is used, along with the roses, in the
making of posies for the ladies. Surine Bezuidenhout,
who is justifiably proud of the miracle she and her husband
have wrought at Rekopane, has the serene quality one gets
only after walking through fire. From her guest-house
- on the banks of the river, of course - on looks onto
an utterly romantic scene of Africa, softened by intensely
lush foliage. Here is a place to gather one self and shed
the layers of care that build up in one’s life.
